Gauteng Miners - Gold Medal Winners

This past weekend the Mens Senior Nationals took place in Cape Town with 2 teams from Cape Town and Gauteng: WP A, WP B, Gauteng A (Miners) and Gauteng B (Colts).

The tournament got underway on Sunday morning with JHB A beating WP B 21 - 0 (the same score as WP A vs WP B that took place the Monday before) the back2back game was between JHB B and WP A with a score of 19-1 in favour of the WP A team.

That evening JHB B took on WP B and with a tight game WP won with 4 goals to 2, however WP A was not to be as fortunate with a loss to the JHB A team 3 - 2.

Monday evening saw a repeat of the Sunday evenings games with "B" playing "B" and "A" playing "A". This time JHB was to take both games on the scoreboard with the B game (bronze medal game) ending at 7-2 in favour of JHB B and the A game (gold medal game) being called seconds before the end of the 60 mintes at 5 goals to 3 in favour of the JHB team.

An unfortunate turn of events with an open ice brawl ended with the game officials calling the game "Null and Void" and the Gold Medal being awarded on the result of the previous game, going to JHB A.

Congratulations to the Gauteng Miners on their Gold medal, just a pity that the tournament had to end the way that it did. The SA Mens Squad will be announced soon.

IIHF Div3 - Team SA promoted to Division 2

With the tournament underway in great form we were soon at ease with pride and glory.

Hails of praise and respect shown to the organisers and the team for an outstanding performance both behind the scenes and on the ice. With a nail-biting loss to Israel being the goal that kept Team SA from the gold medal, the general consensus was that this game definately did not belong in division 3 hockey.

Thus being said, both Israel and South Africa have been promoted to Division 2 where they will once again faceoff against each other. Team SA as a whole was rather pleased about their performance and there is massive talks going on about training camps commencing as soon as July for the 2012 tournament.

Head coach, Ronnie Wood, rose to the challange and produced what is to be the best South African team that this country has seen in many years and many say that if he is to remain the coach for next year, that the team will be even better and obtain their goal of staying in Division 2.

Confidently SAIHA, WPIHA and the City of Cape Town can rest assured that they pulled off possibly the best world championships that the IIHF has been to in the better half of 10 years and we are sure to host many more in the near future.

IIHF Div3 News - Mongolia cancels trip "IIHF.com"

ZURICH – The Mongolian Ice Hockey Federation informed the IIHF on Thursday that they have to withdraw their men’s and U18 national teams from the respective Division III tournaments.

The main reasons are lack of money and of hockey equipment, MIHF General Secretary Choijiljav Baasandavaa states in his message.

The teams were supposed to participate in the 2011 IIHF World Championship Division III in Cape Town, South Africa, and in the 2011 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group A in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.

The IIHF, together with the host organizing committees, will revise both schedules in order to accommodate the remaining teams’ playing schedule. However, the games originally scheduled to be played by the Mongolian teams will technically remain in the respective game schedule and all games including Mongolia will end with a forfeit (5-0) for the opposing team. The revised schedules will shortly appear on IIHF.com.
